Start with the space you use

Measure the length and width, then mark the doorway, drain and anything that needs regular access. Decide what you want to keep: a chair, a drying rack or room to stand with a cup of tea.

Plan around those everyday uses. A narrow balcony usually benefits from planting concentrated along one edge or in a corner.

Before buying: mark your proposed planter footprints on the floor. Open the door fully and walk the route you use most.

Try one of three simple layouts

01 · One planted corner

Place taller plants behind a smaller group of pots. Leave the rest of the balcony open. This works when you want a green view from indoors without lining every wall.

02 · A single planter edge

Repeat a few containers along one side. Leave space to reach each pot for watering, cleaning and pruning.

03 · A small kitchen garden

Keep useful herbs together near a comfortable watering point. Choose the plants after checking the light and the container size they need.

Watch the light before choosing plants

Take a photo in the morning, around midday and in the afternoon. Note where direct sun falls and where nearby buildings cast shade.

Wind and rain exposure also matter. Share these observations with your garden designer so the arrangement suits the actual conditions.

Keep planters practical

  • Choose a finish that works with the floor and railing you already have.
  • Keep drainage holes and the balcony drain accessible.
  • Allow room for growth and access to each pot.
  • Check building rules and load limits before placing heavy containers or fixing anything to railings.

Container size and watering access are practical parts of the layout. The RHS also highlights drainage, weight and exposure when planning balcony gardens. Read its balcony gardening guidance.

Set a budget for your actual space

Root & Sky’s balcony packages start at ₹27,999 for the stated package size of approximately 20–22 ft × 5–7 ft. A smaller balcony needs its own layout and quote.

Compare the package inclusions, then share your measurements for a site visit. Transport, indoor planting and extra items are confirmed separately.

Bring three things to the first conversation

  1. Your approximate measurements and Bengaluru locality.
  2. Photos showing the doorway, floor and view from inside.
  3. How you want to use the balcony and how much care you can give the plants.

We use these details to plan your balcony garden setup and discuss suitable plants and planters.
