Match the plants to the light

Record when your balcony gets direct sun, along with wind and rain exposure. Share photos from different times of day before settling on a plant mix.

Choose the arrangement for those conditions. A plant that suits one part of the balcony may need a different spot a few feet away.

Make the layout easy to look after

  • Keep watering points and each planter within comfortable reach.
  • Group plants with similar care needs where their light requirements also fit.
  • Leave enough space to see the soil, check leaves and remove fallen growth.
  • Use a manageable selection instead of adding a new plant to every gap.

See our small balcony layout guide for three arrangements that preserve usable space.

Check before you water

Check moisture below the surface and follow the needs of the plant and its growing medium. A dry-looking surface alone does not tell you how wet the root area is.

Let excess water drain, keep outlets clear and avoid leaving pots standing in collected water. Heat, wind, rain and container size can all change how quickly a pot dries.

A useful habit: make checking the plants part of your routine. Watering happens when they need it, rather than on one fixed schedule for every pot.

General watering principles: RHS — Watering plants wisely. Your plant-specific care instructions take priority.

Keep the regular jobs small

When you check moisture, look for damaged leaves, pests and blocked drainage. Clear fallen leaves and address changes early.

Feeding and pruning depend on the plant, season and product used. Keep the care instructions from installation handy instead of applying the same treatment to every pot.

Plan for time away

If you travel often, discuss watering access and a care arrangement before installation. Agree who will check the plants while you are away.

If considering irrigation, have its suitability and setup assessed for your balcony. It is a separate addition to the listed balcony packages.

Choose the setup around your routine

All three Root & Sky balcony packages start with 19 plants and 10 planters. Available same-price substitutions can be discussed for your conditions. Extras are separately quoted.

A higher-priced package changes the planter materials and finishes; it does not automatically reduce plant care. Compare Seed, Bloom and Canopy and tell us how much time you want to spend on the garden.
